Trick-or-Treating Learning Experience

I had an interesting experience tonight. After Eaen's school we went to grandma and grandpa's before heading home. By the time we got home, it was close to 6 and there were already kids in the neighborhood. I hurried to get the candy open and in the bowl ad the first group came to the door. Eaen was happy to hand out candy as I put the lights in the pumpkins so we could head out too. As I was putting the lights in a group of 3 kids came to the door.  The mom said something to one of the kids as she walked up the stairs. I looked up as she took candy out of the boys bucket and put it back in the bowl Eaen was holding. She looked at me and said frantically 'I'm sorry. He's autistic.'  I said, 'It's okay.'  As he grabbed another piece from the bowl, she apologized again. I told her 'It's okay. My son does it and he's not.'  I felt terrible she felt the need to apologize. Halloween is supposed to be a fun experience. This year was a learning experience. Eaen is getting into it now. I spent the entire night trying to teach him. Don't grab a handful of candy. Stand on the porch. Don't go in the house. Take one unless they say you can have more. Say Thank You!  Life is a learning experience. Take every chance you get to teach your children to be gracious, kind people. They are the future. I can't imagine trying to raise a child who has challenges most of us don't even begin to understand. Kudos to the parents who face that challenge daily! You are amazing! Thank you!
